Welcome

A NOTE ABOUT THIS GUIDE

I'm so excited to be working with you and I can't wait for our time together during your session! It's normal to be a little nervous about getting photos taken. Honestly, I still get the butterflies before having our family photos taken too - and I do this for a living! I totally get it.

I am thrilled you pulled the trigger (Seriously just imagine the MAGIC we are going to create together!). Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your trust in me. It is an honor to create one of the integral parts of your family's legacy.

Please carefully read the topics I cover below, they will help you get the very BEST out of our session together!

I know such an extensive guide can be a little overwhelming upon first glance...BUT believe it or not, "simple" is our key word! Most of my beloved clients are attracted to the very specific and unique look of my work (well now I'm blushing). Hopefully this describes you as well! This guide is to help you because I do need some of your help to achieve this look. So I'd be in heaven if you read the helpful tips here, and as always, please reach out to me if you have any questions at all!

- Laurel

Are you ready for some good news? You really don't need to do much! Besides outfit selection (which I cover in this guide), all I ask of you is to enjoy your experience. After all, the best part of appreciating the photos on your walls is knowing you had an awesome time getting them taken.

I'm SO excited. Have I mentioned that yet?...

The PRE-Game

How Would You Like To Enjoy Your Images?

When I'm creating an image, I always try to think about how the image is going to be used. My pre-visualization process incorporates the image in print form, whether it will be hanging on a wall or printed on a beautiful archival paper. Knowing this helps me consider the ideal color scheme, the crop of the image, what type of details will be visible at the print size, or viewing distance. After all, it was the final print that got be hooked on photography years ago.

Products include heirloom albums, framed fine art prints, birth announcements, and digital images.

Destination Sessions

While I take most of my sessions in the Bay Area,
I've photographed sessions everywhere from Philadelphia to Salt Lake City to Boise, Idaho. If you have a location in mind that is significant to the two of you, let me know because if our schedules align, I might be able to take your photos outside of my normal area.

Travel fees may apply depending on the location and our availability.

When to schedule your session?

we will schedule your session for the first 10 days of your baby's life

I know you are just excited as I am to capture those little tiny fingers and toes while they last! Once you and baby have returned home from the hospital please contact me to schedule a definite date and time for your babies newborn session. Sessions are typically scheduled 2 to 4 days following your release.

Newborns much younger tend to do very well in the studio, oppose to a baby that is 10-14 days old. They tend not to wake up frequently and as easily when getting them posed for the scene. A mere 48 hours in a newborns life is very crucial when prepping them for their session. After the 10 day mark, newborns have often discovered the art of stretching! Once that happens…they won’t let us curl them up in the cute little newborn poses nearly as easily!

Still need to come in after the 10-14 day mark? Not to worry, capturing each individual stage of a newborn’s development comes with it’s own unique challenges and benefits. No matter when you schedule your session, we will capture beautiful portaits of your new little one.

I’ve found that there isn’t a “good” or “bad” time to take your photos. I normally plan sessions based on a particular “look” a family has in mind, spring flowers for example, or based on schedules.

Sessions typically last about an hour and when when I can—I love to begin outdoor sessions about two hours before sunset. I prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. The first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot. Indoor sessions typically begin between 10:00am and Noon to take advantage of the best light.

I schedule sessions during what I believe will be the best light of the day - which means that it’s super important to be on time. If you’re late to an evening session, we could run out of light before we’ve finished shooting and if your session takes place in the morning, the sun gets more harsh as it rises.

Is there a "good" time to take photos?

Winter

snowfall, hot cocoa and cozy coats

Winter is one of the best times to capture your gorgeous, natural skin tones. Winter palettes can be soft and calm. Winter weather can be hard to predict thought, it may be a situation where we need to be flexible. If you’re planning to take your photos during the winter, keep in mind that if your session takes place in the evening, we could begin shooting as early as 2:30pm to catch the sunset. I recommend dressing in layers so that in between photos you can warm up. Make sure you bring a little extra makeup and tissues in case your nose begins running.

Spring

fresh flowers and sunny days

If there is any season that directly reflects my brand, it's spring! Those blooms? Sublime. The soft greens? Heavenly. There are pros and cons to every season however, and I will say the weather in spring can be a bit temperamental. Luckily we have built-in back up days!

Summer

walks on the beach hand in hand

In spite of the heat, I'm a big fan of summer sessions! Because of the later sunset, sessions sometimes begin as late as 6pm. I'm never one to complain about the longer days and later sunset time. During summer sessions, I recommend bringing extra makeup if needed, a water bottle, and a washcloth or two to make sure you stay fresh throughout your session.

Fall

colorful leaves and snuggling close

Fall is one of the prettiest times of the year (those COLORS!) and because of the perfect weather, my schedules typically book up quickly! If you have your heart set on a fall engagement session, we recommend scheduling it as soon as you book!

I will keep an eye on the forecast the week before our session. It can change quickly...for good or for bad! If the forecast is sketchy there is always a bit of a gamble with whatever choice I make, as the weather can change on a dime. However, I will try to make the best decision based on my professional experience and let you know if we will need to reschedule (I will try to do this before you would begin getting ready!). The most important thing to me is the lighting outside. Even if it's not raining but the clouds are too dark, we will need to reschedule. Dark clouds make for unflattering shadows, and of course the possibility of rain is no fun when you just spent so much time on everyone's hair! If this happens, will proceed with the backup date we chose upon first booking.

In case of bad weather

Pets are welcome to be involved in your session! Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we'll need to choose a pet friendly location.

I recommend planning for your furry friend(s) to be at the first part of your session - I won't use them in every single photo (unless that is what you prefer!) so it's also nice to have a friend available to hold him or her in between shots.

If you're going to bring a pet, I recommend exercising them before the session and bringing toys or treats! Depending on their fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.

TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUR BEST

Here we go! This is either the most stressful of most fun part of the process (although I'm SO here to help you)...it's outfit time!

What you wear sets the tone for your portraits, so choosing your outfits can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be! I will personally walk you through this process and help you to coordinate the perfect look!

All clients have exclusive access to borrow from The client wardrobe for their session(s); a collection of designer gowns for mamas, shirts and sweaters for dads, and the most adorable outfits for babies and kiddos ages 0-5 years. This appeals to a lot of clients, as they get to choose from curated pieces that are guaranteed to photograph well. It's also inexpensive! I am constantly changing wardrobe pieces, making sure to keep it fresh and high-end. You also have the option of bringing your own clothing, though most decide to borrow once they see what I have.

When the ladies wear dresses, it really helps create that timeless look. I highly recommend maxi's for mama's! The floor length flatters and adds to the beauty. When a little breeze flutters by, it helps create motion in the photo. (Wearing dresses is NOT an absolute must, but it really does help create the aesthetic you often see in my work!) If it's cold outside, I recommend bundling up for sure. Don't worry about wearing a dress it it's too cold!

Dresses with lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms. Depending on your location, you might want to consider a fit and flare or a flowy dress!

You can really play up an outfit and add personality and interest to your photos with accessories. Accessorize but keep it simple.

Hats, scarves, jackets, jewelry, etc. can all add a personal touch to the photos. Fresh florals in a crown can be a really romantic touch for you or your girls as well.

First off, this is just a suggestion and not the end of the world, but...clothing that is cream or ivory, photographs white. Clothing that is WHITE-white, photographs blue(ish)! Cream clothes are softer on skin tones and luckily easier than ever to find...(this hasn't always been the case!). So if you can, go with cream.

*The exception to this is if you are using a lot of grey in your clothing! Greys and whites go better than greys and creams! Think cool tones vs. warm tones.

While it isn't 100% necessary, feel free to go all out! Professionally done hair & makeup last longer than typical hair & makeup. They also tend to hold up better for humidity and wind. Professionals know how to accentuate your features to photograph beautifully.

With the settings I use to shoot, pretty please go a shade or two darker than usual with your usual blush and lipstick (these things will photograph lighter than they look in person).

Anything neutral, light and/or NOT distracting works! In the Summer, I love little ones in bare feet if the terrain allows. As for babies who can't walk - if it's warm enough, let's see those cute toes! If it's cold out, neutral boots are adorable, or just about anything as long as it's not a bright color. If mom is wearing a maxi dress, often times we won't be able to see those shoes so no pressure there. When all is said and done, I just want to make sure the shoes don't attract too much attention. We want that attention going to your faces!

There will probably be times during your session when we’re shooting details including your hands - which means it’s a good idea to clean up your nails before your session (this applies to the guys too!).

For the fellas, SIMPLICITY is the best bet! For shorts, I recommend a button-up dress shirt (rolled up to the elbows if the temperatures allow! It helps create a dressy, but not stuffy look). I would avoid polo shirts, at least for my particular style.

For bottoms I highly recommend keeping them light. This can make a HUGE difference in the photo aesthetic. Khakis, tan pants or light grey will work. If you'd like to go the denim route, make them very light. I discourage dark pants (black, navy, dark brown, etc.) because of the contrast it creates with other light colors. Your eye will go right to it!

Be careful not to choose a pattern that is too small - it may accidentally make your photo look a little too busy. Softer, pastel colors tend to photograph better than bright colors - especially since bright colors could reflect on your skin. Cozy sweaters layered over button ups are a great way to stay warm and stylish during the cooler months.

*Adding layers and textures by way of blazers, suspenders, vests, etc. is always a good idea as long as the colors stay muted.

Keep it simple!

First and foremost make sure they like what they are wearing and that the clothes fit perfectly. They should also feel comfortable wearing the outfit you chose for them, especially the shoes. If your daughter doesn't like wearing dresses, don't force her to wear one for picture day. If your son thinks that suspenders or bowties are uncomfortable or silly, don't make him wear those. Happy kids make for happy photos!

If you have multiple children, don't feel like you need to put them all in the same type of outfit. Mixing up the wardrobe pieces will bring a great visual interest to the photos. It also applies to Mom and Dad!

When choosing outfits for young children, avoid any collars or coats that will cover part of their face. When a baby or toddler is being held, everything tends to ride up, so anything with a big collar inevitably blocks that cute little face that we want to see in the pictures.

Props

simple is the name of the game

I like to keep props clean and classic (aka: not too many banners, or things that make the photo cluttered)...remember, I like to keep the focus on the face! That being said, I love including a prop or two, especially if it is meaningful. For example, I LOVE floral bouquets, a beloved book, or a sentimental toy (just for some of the shots). Little props that are simple and meaningful, can add some fun photos to a collage, and make for visual interest. If you DO bring a prop or two, please let me know before we start so I can incorporate them when the time is right in your session.

I think most of us feel this way at heart. Luckily not only are my sessions extremely relaxed, but I fully guide you and your family into poses and give you prompts so you can have moments of genuine laughter and fun together. Often you won't even realize how amazing a moment is and I sneak a photo (such as the example on the left). I'm here to see the beauty in what seems like ordinary moments. It is one of the best and most fulfilling parts of my work.

Throughout your session, we’ll keep an eye on your hair, makeup and outfits to make sure things stay in place. We want you to feel as relaxed as possible and enjoy your time together!

POSING

The Day of the Session

just a few things to keep in mind...

Tips for a successful session:
Babies do very well in the studio for posing when they are in a very deep sleep. To encourage this I highly recommend stimulating the baby at least two hours before your scheduled arrival (a warm bath usually works nicely.) I also encourage you to feed your baby immediately before leaving your home for the session so that they are fed and comportable during the session. Once you arrive we will start preparing him/her for their session, meaning any and all clothing must be taken off, except for the diaper. Most babies do not like the feeling of being naked and prefer to be warm and completely snuggled. To help them feel more comfortable we will have a small heater in place to keep them warm, but if they are fed and tired they will likely be much more willing to sleep despite being naked.
Feeding Information:
Don’t be surprised if you spend time during your session feeding and comforting your baby. Babies are on their own schedules-but even a little top-off will help prolong their sleep. The studio offers new moms a calm, intimate space to feed their babies, which can make all the difference when you need to nurse your baby until they’re full and ready to sleep! For bottle-fed babies, have a bottle ready and handy so we can feed them mid-pose to keep them calm and relaxed. You can also have a pacifier nearby to help soothe your new addition.Your baby may eat a little more than usual during your session. When babies wake up, their first thought is often, “Oh! I’m awake, so it must be time to eat!” Don’t stress! Newborn photos take lots of patience and time, which is why we schedule extra time for newborn sessions.
Studio Cleanliness:
I wash all used props and blankets after each newborn session with free and clear detergent. As the little ones will be diaper free at times during their session the blankets do become soiled at times, this is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about, leave it all to me!
Noise During Your Session:
Please do whatever you can to keep the noise to a minimum during our session. Maintaining a calm environment is also a big key to a successful newborn shoot. I do have a white noise machine that I will keep close to baby during the session to help soothe him or her. Babies love strong and rhythmic sound.
Studio Temperature:
Since babies are usually photographed naked, the studio will be set at a temperature of 80F to ensure baby is warm and comfortable. If we’re not sweating, it’s probably not warm enough for baby! Parent’s please make sure to wear comfortable loose clothing.
Session Safety:
Safety is my number one priority when handling your baby, so either mom or dad will be my spotter/assistant. All eyes and hands are to be kept around baby during posing. During the session I will be handling and posing baby, but don’t worry I have plenty of experience handling a newborn, I will hold and care for him or her as if they were my own!

As the session can last several hours I highly recommend eating a good hearty breakfast before you arrive. I know this can be a very exciting and stressful time for you, especially when adding sleep deprivation in the mix. As much as my goal is for baby to be comfortable, I also want you to be comfortable and at ease!

The opportunity to photograph these precious moments is very humbling for me. If there is anything I can do to help throughout this process, please let me know. Again thank you for giving me the opportunity to capture these unforgettable memories!

DON'T DISCIPLINE THE SIBLINGS
Ok, ok, hear me out on this. I'm not telling you how to parent, BUT... for just the time we have together, pretty please don't worry a single bit about your child's behavior. Sometimes kids can sense that they are about to do something out of the norm (I mean, how often does your whole family get dressed up and head out to a field, amiright?), and they may get extra silly or start acting out. I totally understand you want them to be on their best behavior because I would feel the same with my kids! ...but in the spirit of just having a relaxing, fun experience (and getting good photos!), it works the very best if disciplining is paused during the session. More often than not it backfires anyway and the grumpy faces stick around longer. For what it's worth I rarely see this but I just wanted to plant a little seed that you don't have to worry about being "the bad guy" for the time we are together (hooray! Enjoy the vacation!). Trust me, I have 3 kids. If anyone has empathy for you, it's ME.

I have a "bag of tricks" that usually works if a child is having challenges. Also, we have plenty of time to give them the pauses they need. I can stop and walk with them, talk with them, ask them about their favorite stories, shows, or toys. Worst case scenario? They stay grumpy and you will get some pretty entertaining photos. Some of my VERY favorite photos (and prints on my wall!) are of my babies with an extreme scowl. When my little brother was a baby, we had family photos done at a studio (hey there Olan Mills and early 1990's!). He screamed the entire time and my mom cried the whole way home. That photo is our family's favorite EVER. .... do you see a theme here?

Don't worry Mama. We will get some great stuff.

HELP YOUR CHILDREN PREPARE
Hype up the shoot to your kids (And or husband too). If you are really excited about it and express your excitement they will get excited too. Make a whole day or activity out of it if you can.
Make sure your kids are fed, I know in all the rush this important little detail can be forgotten. Grab them a snack on the way out the door, so that no one gets too hangry during the shoot. Personally, I avoid food or treats during the actual session. What seems like good way to keep kids interested just turns into awkward chewing faces and candy smudged clothes.

DRESS YOUR CHILDREN ONCE YOU ARRIVE
Try not to dress your little one until you get to the location. Kids often get car sick or get into some kind of shenanigan on the way to pictures. Somehow it seems that on the day of your session all the things just go wrong. I know it may seem backwards to show up not ready but dressing them there can avoid a lot of potential issues. Just plan to arrive a bit earlier and have all the kiddo’s clothes pressed and placed carefully into the car. You will want to double (or triple) check and make sure you have everything you need. For important events, I like to pack the car way in advance with their clothes (and food if needed), that way I have time to get myself ready without running around like a chicken without a head.

PLEASE BE ON TIME OR EVEN BETTER, EARLY!
Please plan on arriving ten minutes before our start time, or even earlier if you plan on getting the kids dressed after you get there. It also gives you a little cushion in case you hit a snag. Unexpected things happen on photo day - hair doesn't cooperate, traffic gets crazy, you have to run back because you forgot something (or is all of this just me?). If you give yourself extra time you will be extra relaxed! I will also arrive a few minutes early to set up and can't wait to see you there, once we meet at the location I will touch base with you to review the plan for the session.

Seize The Day

If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t get dressed up all that often. Which means that the day of your session is the perfect occasion to stop for dessert as a family (or brunch if your session is in the morning!)

The session is another part of celebrating your love and heading off for a treat is a great way to end the session! There’s nothing like grabbing dinner or ice cream to celebrate the memories you just captured or are planning on capturing together later in the day. This also helps everyone really look forward to family pictures year after year.

Bring your everyday necessities (think diaper bag) and things you need to get little ones dressed and ready, but once you arrive, plan to leave everything in the car (including wallets and phones so you don’t end up with bulging pockets in your photos.)

Don’t worry about bringing diaper bags, strollers, ect. around the location. I come prepared with everything we might need.

If your little one has a favorite comfort item (binky, stuffed animal, book, ect) feel free to bring it along. It can help them feel more comfortable and can be fun to have some pictures with an item that has become a part of your family story.

What Should I Bring?

What Should I Bring?

Packing for the Session

Your images will be culled to the absolute best of the best, a minimum of 20 images and all images will be hand edited to match my unique style. Within two weeks we will conduct your reveal and ordering session where you will make your portrait selections. Your order will then be processed and completed within three weeks (slightly longer for albums and specialty products). I will mail or set a time for delivery of your art as soon as it arrives! Your images will be archived for reorder for one year.

What happens after our session?

post - production

I love capturing perfectly imperfect moments and turning them into family heirlooms. This is not just about combining the most perfect setting with the best outfits. It is about the connections and love between people. So I focus on the interactions between people and look for genuine, real moments to highlight. I am not just creating a pretty picture, I am creating a priceless memory to share with those you love.

That being said, proper preparation for your session can really change the overall look of your final images. The three things that I am specific about are: clothing, session location, and time of day. There is a method to my madness, and these three things can completely change the look of an image. By keeping them consistent in all sessions, you are guaranteed beautiful images. With years of experience as my guide, I am here to help you achieve the perfect combination of genuine love and beauty.

At the end of the day, my greatest wish is that you, your children, and grandchildren ADORE these photos forever. After all, your family is what life is ALL about, and one of my greatest joys is that I get to be a small, behind-the-scenes part of preserving your legacy.

A few parting words

I know that this guide is long and hopefully it covers everything you need to know to prep for your portrait session! However if there is something I missed, or you need a recommendation feel free to email
